Platelet rich plasma injections - PRP

What is it ?
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a part of our normal blood that is mixed in with other cell types such as white blood cells that fight infection and red blood cells that carry oxygen to our tissues. The plasma rich in platelets contain high concentration of platelets which are key factors in causing blood to clot and it carries numerous factors important to heal wounds and decrease pain. The addition of these platelets can help heal wounds and injuries faster.

How is it given ?
You present to the clinic for a 20–30-minute appointment at which point in time we will start with a blood draw, which is then placed in a centrifuge and spun. This spinning allows the PRP to be separated, concentrating the healing factors. At this point the PRP will be injected by your surgeon with the help of ultrasound guidance into the site of injury to enhance the body's healing potential.

When to consider this treatment ?
After meeting with your surgeon in clinic he will discuss the benefits and risks of all types of non-surgical management for your injury and advice if PRP is a viable option for the treatment of your pain if you have not improved adequately with physiotherapy, over the counter pain medications or other infiltrations.

Expectations ?
Since this infiltration is a natural biologic product catered to increase the body's natural healing, results come on after the first 1-2 weeks and continue to improve there on. There is a slight delay to feel the improvement and depending on the site injected your surgeon will prescribe a brace to rest the area and maximize the healing potential of the PRP.

Side effects ?
Since the PRP comes from the patient's own blood, allergic reactions are not possible. The site of injection may be sore for 1-2 days but this can be treated with over the counter pain medication and ice on the site of injection.

Cost ?
750$ tax included per treatment.
